A relatively new Hyde Park- based business is always “on doody.”

Since April, Linda Redfern’s Pup Cleanup has been offering kennel-free boarding, a dog-walking service, dog- sitting service during the day, as well as a pet waste removal service.

“It’s going well,” Redfern, 42, said. “There’s really two sides to what I’m doing. There’s the pooper-scooper side and also the care services, dog-sitting and boarding. Both sides are doing pretty well.

Redfern, who is originally from Reading, decided to board dogs in her Hyde Park home because of her love for her own dogs: two mutt terriers she rescued from the pound and believes were abused as puppies.

A friend gave her the idea for the pooper-scooper business.

“It’s not an original idea,” she said of her business. “I was interested in starting my own business and I have dogs of my own. I stated researching different dog and pet-based businesses. A friend of mine had described the work of pooper-scoopers and she turned me onto it and I said, ‘Yeah, that looks pretty good,’ because at the time there was no one in the area doing it, so I said ‘Perfect, I’ll be the only one.’

“I started the business because I do love my own dogs,” she continued. “I know how other people feel about their dogs. I feel it’s an important service to offer and give to the community; to trust us with their dogs and to take care of the yard where their dog lives and plays. Our focus is really on the dogs.”

Redfern, who services Hyde Park, Dedham, Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, West Roxbury, Newton, Brookline, Chestnut Hill, Dedham, Norwood, Westwood, Quincy and Westin, has since seen a few other folks in the area open similar businesses and post flyers.

“There’s no one in same territory as me,” Redern said.

With an emphasis on personalized service, Redfern meets with clients and their canines to assess their needs and create a customized service plan at a competitive rate, including dog sitting that starts at $30 per night and dog walking at a rate of $20 for 30 minutes. She said pooper-scooping starts at $15 per week and varies based on the number of dogs in the yard, the yard’s size and the frequency of the cleanings.

“Our goal is to provide service that will enhance the relationship between dogs and their owners,” Redfern said. “We provide your dog with top-quality care and attention even when you’re not home.

“A lot of people when they travel don’t want to put their dog in a kennel,” she continued. “People feel more comfortable leaving dogs in a relaxed home environment.”
